“Jason Donavan! OMG – is that you?” I thought to myself as I watched segments of the performances during the media call. The makeup and costumes of the brilliant cast reflect the intricacies of the “Rocky Horror” legacy that’s much more complicated than the “The Time Warp” of “jump to the left … and then a step to the right”. The gothic, horror, rock n roll opening night musical at the Theatre Royal Sydney for The Rocky Horror Show 50th Anniversary Tour certainly did not disappoint the crowd.
In this cult classic, sweethearts Brad and Janet, stuck with a flat tyre during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of ‘sweet transvestite’ Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Brad and Janet encounter a few adventures they will never forget (a-hem, and for those asking if it’s suitable to bring your 14-year old to the show I would say ‘no’). They meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker and a creepy butler Riff Raff (played by Henry Rollo who I must say I could not keep my eyes off with his sensational performance of Riff Raff and who doesn’t like to do the Time Warp again and again!). Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.”
The Rocky Horror Show musical in Sydney stars Jason Donavan as Frank N Furter, Myf Warhurst as The Narrator. Joining them is Stellar Perry as Magenta, Henry Rollo as Riff Raff, Ellis Dolan as Eddie/Dr Scott, Darcey Eagle as Columbia, Ethan Jones as Brad, Deidre Khoo as Janet, Loredo Malcolm as Rocky.
The musical is complete with sass and highly entertaining so if you were thinking of taking your mum, dad, family or friends to see it – don’t dream it, see it!
