It was over 40 degrees Celsius in Sydney and we were in the heart of the deadliest bushfire season. I had just watched the news that the NSW and Victorian bushfires have become so severe that it was starting to affect power supply in Sydney and we were advised to reduce power usage. I cleaned out my spare fridge, switched it off, turned off the air conditioning and decided not to cook dinner or I’d be using up power for cooking and cleaning so decided to look for good simple pho noodles nearby. It was too hot to eat anything heavy. I headed off to Eat Fuh in Marrickville also known as ‘Little Vietnam” in Sydney. My cravings for Vietnamese food also was the result of watching Luke Nguyen’s Railway Vietnam SBS Food series where I would be salivating at each episode I watch as Luke cook up some authentic Vietnamese dishes using what’s around him in the location he was in that particular day – including one on a rattling open country train. The episodes are excellent.
Eat Fuh has become an institution in Marrickville, a place you go to get good pho. I had a Fuh Noodle soup with chicken and you have a choice of a regular or large size. The regular size was more than enough for one. Their Fuh Noodle Soup is rich and flavoursome as their bone broth cooked with star anise, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, onions served with thick rice noodles and garnished with coriander, basil, shallots, sprouts, lemon, chilli, hoisin and chilli paste.
I also tried their shrimp and pork dumplings wrapped in banana leaves. It’s not like the Chinese dumplings which are more rounded. The Vietnamese dumplings are more flat, shaped in a rectangle and the dough is semi translucent and stickier. These banana leave dumplings were fragrant so and so delicious. They’re worth a try.
The eatery itself is pretty basic but clean ensuring the focus is on the delicious Vietnamese food. There wasn’t air conditioning despite the hot weather but I didn’t mind as it gives it an atmosphere of street food in Vietnam.
I also noticed on a quick google search that Eat Fuh is also open in Darlinghurst and the menu is slightly different. I haven’t been but if I’m in the area I would definitely go.
For now, the original Eat Fuh has satisfied me and I’m happy.
