Bonjour! If you are looking for something to do this weekend then head over to the Bastille French Festival at The Rocks in Sydney which is on until Sunday 14 July and the festival seems to be getting bigger every year. There are a lot more villages, space, food and wine stalls, entertainment and visual displays this year in comparison to last to keep you interested and to make you want to go a second time.
Some tips for this weekend if you decide to go:
- You can just wander the festival village in Circular Quay or download this easy to read map to see where you are going. You have to visit the Christmas in July village in the evening to see the light display and snow that comes on every 15 minutes.
- There are 5 villages and I would start from the The Island – Kanak Beach Village at the East Village Circular Quay and end up in the Christmas in July Village. The 5 villages are:
- The Island – Kanak Beach Village. Inspired by the Kanak culture of the French New Caledonia Island, this beach village will see sand transforming the Quay. Two sweets to try are KOI’s New Caledonia Island cake, that features Pineapple cake, Coconut mousse with pandan, passionfruit & vanilla caramel, mango & pineapple compote and the Mother and Messina’s Mother Puffer with puff pastry vol-au-vent topped with vanilla gelato and warm caramelised pineapple.
- The Gourmet Produce Alley in East Circular Quay, beneath the Cahill Expressway. The Gourmet Produce Alley is also home to a selection of gourmet delicacies such as French truffles Authentic; French cheeses to take home with you; Freshly baked macarons; Flamekush, or “tarte flambee” (a traditional dish from the Alsace Region); Fine sweets, including candies, eclairs, cakes and chocolates; Fresh mustards and fruit preserves and other premium lifestyle products, carefully curated by our Bastille Festival Team, including French linen, scented candles, beautiful scarves and handmade jewellery.
- Customs House, The Parisian Foodies Village: At the Parisian Foodie Village, you’ll get to taste all the French favourites, especially French wines from Bordeaux and Languedoc.
- First Fleet Park, French Food Fusion Village. Go to the oysters and champagne bar and also Masala Kitchen where you can get a fusion of Indian and French food. Indian dishes are made with French spices instead of Indian spices. Try the Paneer Tikka Ratatouille if you want something warm and hearty for dinner.
- Christmas in July, The Rocks Village. The thing to try here is the ‘aligot’, magical melting pot of cheese and whipped potatoes created by Frenches from Rosebery. It’s only available at the Bastille Festival.
