Curation of things you can "see, taste and do"

10 comedians to see at the Sydney Comedy Festival | Sydney

April 6, 2014 by Jenny

Who is up for a good laugh this month and next? I picked up the brochure at the Hayden Orpheum Cinemas for the 10th Annual Sydney Comedy Festival to be held from 22 April to 17 May 2014 the other day. Flicking through it, I wondered how on earth anyone who hasn’t seen any of the comedians’ stand up performances before can pick from more than 170 shows on offer.

Here are my top picks to go and see (after consulting with a few comedy freaks) and why.

#1 Cam Knight

Why? With movie star good looks, Cam can skilfully work a crowd with his razor sharp humour from start to finish.
When? Thu 1 – Sat 3 May 9:30pm
Where? Wild Oats Wine Bar, Enmore Theatre
Cost? Thurs $22 Fri | Sat $27.50

 #2 Michael Hing

Why? Unconventional, very funny and talented geek from the Shire
When? Wed 14- Sat 17 May 7pm
Where? Thatchers Cider House, Factory Theatre
Cost? Adult $22.50 Concession $19.50

#3 Ray Badran

Why? Relaxed, everyday-is-a-weekend demeanour about Ray with some of the most funny every day material that you can relate to.
When? Tue 13, Thurs 15 & Sat 17 May 7pm
Where? Matchbox, Factory Theatre
Cost? $15

#4 Rhys Nicholson

Why? Impeccably groomed Buddy Holly style, this guy does not hold back. Highly intelligent and highly graphic (be warned). A very polished comedian
When? Tue 6, Thurs 8 – Sat 10 May & Wed 14-Sat 17 May 9.30pm
Where? Wild Oats Wine Bar, Enmore Theatre
Cost? Tues $15 Wed | Thurs $20 Fri|Sat $25

 #5 Sam Simmons

Why? Most daring and unconventional comics in Australia. Completely original and vastly absurd.
When? Tue 6 – Sat 10 May 7:30pm & Sun 11 May 6:30pm
Where? Factory Floor, Factory Theatre
Cost? Preview Tue $25 Wed | Thurs | Sun $30 Fri | Sat $35

#6 Tien Tran

Why? Rough around the edges, his comedy style covers many everyday themes.
When? Tues 6 – Fri 9 May 7pm
Where? Container, Factory Theatre
Cost? Tues|Wed|Thurs $15 Fri $20

#7 Tommy Dean

Why? Seasoned observer of everyday absurdity. Very well accomplished and will leave you with a few things to ponder.
When? Tues 29 Apr – Sat 3 May 7.15pm
Where? Harold Park Hotel
Cost? Adult $29.90 Concession $24.90

#8 Ronny Chieng

Why? Intense, blunt, honestly indifferent and very funny
When? Tues 6 – Sat 10 May 8.30pm, Sun 11 May 7.30pm & Tues 13 – Sat 17 May 8.30pm
Where? Thatchers Cider House, Factory Theatre
Cost? Preview Tues $19 Wed|Thurs|Sun $22 Fri|Sat $29

#9 Genevieve Fricker

Why? Awkwardly weird. Absolutely hilarious.
When? Tues 13 – Sat 17 May 8.15pm
Where? Matchbox, Factory Theatre
Cost? Tues | Wed | Thurs $15 Fri | Sat $20

#10 Khaled Khalafalla

Why? Australia’s fastest rising comic star. Young, smart and witty.
When? Tues 6 – sat 10 May & Tues 13 – Sat 17 May 9.45pm
Where? Harold Park Hotel
Cost? Adult $24.90 Concession $19.90

Although I have never seen Steen Raskopoulos, I am told he’s killing the shows at the Melbourne Comedy Festival 2014.

When? Tues 13 – Sat 17 May 7.30pm, Sun 18 May 6.30pm
Where? Factory Floor, Factory Theatre
Cost? Tue $15 Wed | Thur | Sun $20 Fri | Sat $22

For those who like to see something different, I recommend you go and see Theatresports National Championships, where thinking on your feet and laughter go hand in hand. This is on Sat 26 April 6pm at the Enmore Theatre (tickets from $28).

If you still can’t decide, then go for the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase. For Sydney central locations either go to the Sydney Comedy Store where the showcase is on every Thurs-Sat 8.30pm or Hayden Orpheum Cremorne on Wed 14 May 8pm (tickets from $29.50).
